Hiking Vs Trekking – The Differences

The terms seem to be used interchangeably on many websites and travel books. It becomes even more confusing when some companies sell their boots as ‘trekking boots’ and then proceed to state that they can be used on long hikes. And when is a walk a trek and when is it a hike? It becomes even more confusing when the word trekking is used to refer to the ascent of a mountain, like Island Peak or Mera Peak in Nepal, both over 6000m and both requiring the use of technical climbing gear. How can they be called ‘trekking peaks?’

The term ‘hiking’ is often used to refer to day walks in natural surroundings, on clearly marked paths. It is undertaken for leisure, recreation and the purpose of exercise. A small day pack is used to carry water, light weight fleece and snacks. In places such as Canada and New Zealand, the term is often used interchangeably with rambling, hill walking or tramping.

‘Trekking’, by contrast is considered to be more strenuous, covers greater distances across varying terrains, and requires camping over night and carrying heavy packs with food, sleeping bags and gear. The term is actually derived from the Afrikaans work, trek, which comes from the Dutch word, trecken, referring to a lengthy and arduous journey over vast distances and often, unchartered ground. It is often associated with the migration of people across land from one area to another.

Does this mean then that if a day hike is difficult, over rough ground and through thick forest with no paths, that it is a trek? In Australia, they would call this bushwhacking, and in other places they call it stamping. When you visit the Mountain Gorilla in Rwanda or Uganda, it is a one day hike, but through dense forest, over very uneven and difficult terrain. No wonder there is so much confusion.

But let us not end the confusion there. Anyone who has tried to take out travel insurance to cover their ‘trekking’ or ‘hiking’ trip, will have discovered that these activities are often listed as ‘hazardous pursuits’. In fact, some insurance companies even lump terms like hiking and mountaineering together as through they can be used interchangeably or are synonymous The there are other companies who classify any hikes over an altitude of 2000m as mountaineering. Sorry Scotland, but it means that your famous peak, Ben Nevis (1352m), is not a mountain after all but simply a trekking peak?

Perhaps the best way to look at it is that a trek is generally completed over several days made up of hiking, hill walking, tramping and bushwhacking.

At the end of the day, does it really matter? It is all about semantics and interpretation. The most important thing is that you enjoy it.

Ensiferum Album Review – "One Man Army"

Finnish metal band Ensiferum can now be called true veterans of the genre. Ensiferum was founded in 1995 and they are still leaving headbangers with sore necks in 2015, probably even more than ever. The Fins who describes their brand of metal as melodic folk metal has recorded their strongest album so far. The new album ‘One Man Army’ shows the band increasing their craft on every level.

Ensiferum’s sound is still marked by combining death metal influences and harsh vocals with melodies and folk inspirations. On ‘One Man Army’ they have perfected this blend even further. The album starts with the 90-second intro ‘March Of War’ before it breaks into ‘Axe Of Judgement’, a classic opener with neck-breaking speed, lots of double-bass action and fast riffs. In true Ensiferum style they include references to Russian folk music, a choir and a break in the middle of the song that does not only groove but also includes Accept-like choir sequences. Most metal fans will rejoice.

‘Heathen Horde’ follows and brings more traditional metal parts, some guitar melodies even sound like Maiden. Arching over all this is the extensive use of the choir-like gang vocals, a recurring theme for the remainder of the album. The break in the middle ventures into medieval folk music before the band picks up speed again. Ensiferum then get into fifth gear with the title track ‘One Man Army’. Ultra-fast riffs, sharp melodies and again the choir are the trademarks of this song. The 2-minute ballad ‘Burden Of The Fallen’ provides a welcomed break.

The remaining six songs of the album stay on the same high-quality level. Ensiferum range from epic song structures (the 11-minute ‘Descendant, Defiance, Domination’) to fast up-beat tracks (‘Two Of Spades’) to late Maiden-like prog adventures (‘Warrior Without A War’). It is hard to pick a highlight of the album. All songs have their own little treasures to discover. The special edition of ‘One Man Army’ comes with three bonus songs including a cover of the classic ‘Rawhide’ which really suits the band’s sound.

Ensiferum has not changed their style compared to previous album. Neither have they rewritten the story of heavy metal. But what they have done is to create a unique brand of metal that is recognisable and different from most mainstream metal bands these days. It is not the search for harder, faster and more extreme metal that you find on this album. Instead you find well-crafted songs that will make for a neck-breaking live performance.

Bottom line is that Ensiferum have released a very strong album which will be on many top 10 lists at the end of the year. The metal veterans from Finland have perfected their sound even further. Their six full-length album releases have grown stronger from record to record. ‘One Man Army’ is the logical continuation in this row of strong releases. It seems the band has a lot more to give in the coming years. Watch them live if they play close to you.

Duckweed Control And Restoration Of Your Beautiful Pond

Duckweed control is perhaps the most onerous task that one has to undertake, irrespective of whether you like it or not. It’s imperative that you maintain a fine balance between the plant and animal in your pond, and if one overpowers the other the ecology will get disturbed and there will be commotion inside the pond.

How to Identify Duckweed

Duckweeds are miniature green plants that floats atop the pond, lakes, or in still water. These can be easily identified with very little leaves (around 1-3) and a quarter of an inch in total, and usually consists of only 1 to 3 leaves. Each little plant has its own short roots coming from the bottom.

Even during the winters, they remain green and continue to float, though majority of them die out. During summers, duckweed accumulate in abundance and form bed like or string like formation and float on the top of the still water.

Is It a Bad Plant?

A lot of people by its sheer ugly look form an opinion of it as a bad plant and there have been debates if it’s good to completely remove it from the pond or keep it in minimal quantity. Experts feel that it’s good to completely eradicate rather than in bounty. The main thing with duckweed is that every single plant have the capacity to reproduce a new plant within next 24 hours, provided the environment is conducive.

When duckweed covers your entire pond, it obstructs sunlight entering the pond and the aquatic flora and fauna can’t get enough of it which is imperative for their survival.

As a result, all water-dwelling plants die and in due course it becomes fatal for other plants and animals to survive inside the pond. This will lead to formation of newer duckweeds as they consume nutrients like phosphorus and nitrogen from the dead organic matter present at the bottom of the lake.

On the other hand, if the duckweed is present in smaller quantities, it will bolster much better ecosystem which is beneficial for both fish and plants. The sight of duckweed in small numbers floating around the lotus or water lilies even look beautiful just remember that is an indication that it may soon be covering the entire pond.

Hence, a lot of people long to get duckweeds inside their pond. As a matter of fact, many pond owners have shown interest and take counselling as how to grow duckweed. Also, to control its growth, many pond owners introduce koi fish and grass carp which will limit their growth.

To sum up, its ideal that you hire a professional agency such as Aquacide Co. who can help guide you in your pond maintenance from time-to-time. These individuals offer expert advice and can recommend treatment or maintenance procedures and when to use products such as Fluridone to completely eradicate it.

It’s Over

One of Barbara Streisand’s famous hits was the tune “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers Anymore” the lyrics of which imply that the romance is over.

People sent flowers for a number of reasons:

1. Special Occasions – Advertising has encouraged us to order delivery of a bouquet for birthdays, anniversaries, Mother’s Day or other celebrations.

2. Tributes – When someone wins an award or has made a significant achievement, flowers are often sent in recognition.

3. Trouble – Illness or death can trigger people to send flowers when they want to show care and concern.

4. Romance – A common way to show someone that you are interested in developing or maintaining a relationship is to send a bouquet.

5. Habit – Some people routinely send a florist delivery or have their administrative assistant do it for them. This might be more to do with the giver wanting to look good than anything.

6. Memories – George Burns arranged for his wife to receive a rose every single day after his death so that she would be reminded that he had loved her.

7. Guilt – Flowers often are used as a way of saying “I’m sorry” or “Forgive me” when a transgression has occurred.

When you are not receiving flowers anymore there could be a number of reasons for this:

1. Finances – Perhaps there just isn’t enough money to pay for them at this time.

2. Memory – People forget or don’t understand how important you feel to be remembered.

3. Values – What is expected by one might not be expected by another.

4. Restrictions – Sometimes flowers are not allowed or welcomed. For example, the ICU will not allow flowers!

5. Fear – The other person might not order flowers because they are worried that you will think they are up to no good.

6. Change – The relationship may be in trouble or the passion might have died.

7. Misunderstandings – Perhaps you gave the impression that you have allergies or don’t like flowers.

If you have measured the health of your relationship by whether you do or do not receive flowers, you are in trouble. It is important to never assume that you know what is happening or that “it’s over” just because you didn’t get a delivery from the florist. The best thing to do is to always have clear and open communication so that you know what is truly happening.

You see it is talking and not the flowers that allow you to know the truth! (Oh, and if it really is over, make sure that you don’t confuse the issue either with silence or by continuing to send flowers because you don’t have the courage to be honest).

SEARCH INSIDE YOURSELF, Increase Productivity, Creativity and Happiness by Chade-Meng Tan

Chade-Meng Tan is a Google engineer who with the assistance of some Zen Masters and some friends, devised an extraordinary mental program: Search Inside Yourself. Chade’s work at Google has been science-based, developing the incredible programs that go on inside Google headquarters. Google has long been at the forefront of creativity, thinking of new ways to do things. This easy-going, unpressured work-environment has led to many of the innovations from Google.

Daniel Goleman the author of Emotional Intelligence went to Google headquarters to give a talk on that subject. He was surprised that so many engineers and technical people turned up to listen to his talk. Chade saw that at the heart of emotional intelligence was knowing yourself. And the best way to know yourself — what goes on inside your head — is through mindfulness meditation.

Google executives approved of this development, and it has become a regular part of the Google culture. Chade wanted the public to experience the benefits of this course, and so with help from some other experienced meditators, developed the program explained in this book.

Chade became interested in meditation after reading about tests that revealed all the physical, mental, and spiritual benefits of meditation. He decided that, with the approval of his Google leaders, to introduce a method of releasing the mind from artificial restraints.

The basis of this program is Mindfulness Meditation.

Even if you just read this book, you would learn a lot of useful mental techniques, but by following the Mindfulness Program, you will develop your mental skills, and at the same time, lay a foundation of calmness, objectivity, and inner knowledge.

Chade writes: “Meditation, at its simplest, is the training of attention. With enough meditative training, one’s attention can become unwaveringly calm and focused. With that enhanced quality of attention, one’s mind can easily, and for extended periods, become highly relaxed and alert at the same time. With that combination of relaxation and alertness, three wonderful qualities of mind naturally emerge: calmness, clarity, and happiness.”

You will soon see the benefits of following this practice. Chade gives lots of simplified ways of doing the meditation, which can be done sitting, walking, or listening. You can start by just doing a one-breath meditation each day. As simple as that.

This book contains a lot of little cartoon drawings related to the text. I found them a bit distracting, and not particularly useful, but someone else may find them amusing. Don’t let them put you off the program.

All in all the book is a great introduction to mindfulness meditation, an elementary, well-explained course in a single book.

Search Inside Yourself, has been taught at Google headquarters for the past eight years. No wonder they never run out of new ideas.

Selling Your House? Mow Your Lawn!

A property that has a well manicured lawn has one of the best opportunities at showing pride in ownership than any other outdoor technique.

For one thing, there is a large upswing in the priority that homeowners place in their outdoor living spaces.

Therefore, the landscaping of your front yard (especially) as well as that of your back yard should look its very best when it's selling time. Your landscaping will make a huge contribution to the resale value of your home, so make sure that it's doing its best to help you out.

In fact, studies have shown that when the landscaping of a home is in excellent condition, it can sell for about 4 to 5 percent higher, while homes with landscaping in very poor condition can sell for 8 to 10 percent less. That's a huge difference in the overall selling price of your home.

You might be wondering exactly how much time you should dedicate to sprucing up the landscape of your property. How much time and money is worth it for your sale?

Even if you put a minimal amount of money, effort, and time in to your landscaping, it will help you in selling your home, and sometimes even getting a boost in the selling price. Every effort you make will help.

However, do not overdo it. Remember that it's not a selling feature; It's only something to help the overall appeal of your property, so that the other selling features will be better appreciated.

You should keep your lawn mowed so that it is even, and neatly short. Keep it well weeded, as these will only appear as blemishes to your landscaping. Make sure to use a weed eater to do the edges, as this gives your work a superior finish touch.

If there are any "bald" patches in your lawn, buy a small bag of seed and care for the spot, filling it in. This is especially important if you have a dog who digs or who leaves "pet damage" where s / he does his or her business.

After you fill in the dead spots that your dog has left, make sure to water the areas after your dog "waters," to prevent new dead patches from forming. Watering the areas will dilute the urine to stop it from burning the grass.

This effort makes an immeasurable difference in the overall malnutrition of the house, and the impression that it will leave potential buyers.
