Carp Fishing Tackle Review: Wychwood Equinox 12K Big Pit Reel

In some Asian cultures, the carp is regarded as a sacred animal, capable of transforming itself into a dragon. If you’ve ever had one of these feisty fish on your line, I’m sure you’ll heartily concur. Although I enjoy all types of fishing, stalking the wily carp is my preferred pastime. To be equal to the task, I’m always on the lookout for carp fishing tackle to add to my collection. Here’s some information about a great, affordable reel from Wychwood, the Equinox 12K big pit carp reel.

About Big Pit Reels

Big pit reels are well suited to carp fishing because they have been designed to hold a much larger amount of line than conventional reels. For example, a big pit reel generally has nearly three times the capacity of a typical baitrunner reel. A good big pit reel will hold more than 400 metres of 15 pound test line or 380 yards of 16 pound test line. Another feature I like about this reel that it has an extra large M10 aluminium spool that reduces line memory and improves line lay with its special low friction lip. A spare aluminium spool is included with the reel. High quality big pit reels like the Equinox 12K are perfect for long range carp and beach fishing. This reel delivers the line perfectly every time.

Features of the Wychwood Equinox 12K Big Pit Reel

Unlike many reels in its class, the Wychwood Equinox has an exceptionally large number of ball bearings: 13. There’s also a roller bearing drive and a durable machined aluminium handle. The reel sports an elegant wooded torpedo grip. I appreciate the instant anti-reverse and the high speed 5.0:1 retrieve ratio. The one turn front drag has multiple discs and the D-Osc feature ensures perfect line lay by compensating for the non-linear oscillation speed of the spool. Line lay is particularly important to me because I want to avoid the problems associated with uneven line lay, such as shorter distance on casts and a lack of smoothness on drag release when fighting a fish. A uniform oscillation system functions to lay the line flat on the spool and helps the angler avoid these problems. I’ve found the D-Oscsystem on the Equinox to be durable, reliable, simple and compact. Finally, the Equinox has SMS rotor balancing. The Equinox’s smaller body gives it amazing balance, especially when I mate it with a long-range carp rod.

About Wychwood

The product developers at Wychwood all are devoted carp anglers. This means they bring a wealth of experience to the design and manufacturing process. Equinox reels are designed using CAD (computer aided design), Legendary for reliability and durability, Wychwood products are exhaustively field tested to guarantee flawless and optimal performance.

For my money, the Wychwood Equinox 12K big pit reel is a steal at £79.99, but do look for it on special for as little as £56.99. An excellent piece of carp fishing tackle!

Faisal Mosque Pakistan

The Faisal Mosque is located in Islamabad, Pakistan. The mosque is also known as the Shah Faisal Masjid. It was completed in 1986 and is said to be exceptionally large and unique as compared to other mosques. The mosque was built in honor of King Faisal bin Abdul Aziz of Saudi Arabia. King Faisal bin Abdul Aziz suggested the building of the mosque and largely funded the mosque after a visit to Pakistan. The mosque has always been regarded as the national mosque of Pakistan and it symbolizes the hopes and aspirations of the nation.

The design of the mosque was decided on by an international competition of seventeen participating countries that submitted forty three proposals. Of the forty three proposals, a Turkish architect Vedat Dalokay’s proposal was chosen. His design was chosen on 1969 after the competition. His proposal was that the mosque be designed in the shape of a desert Bedouin’s tent. Construction on the mosque began in 1976 and was completed in 1986.

The Faisal Mosque is located on an elevated ground and has a picturesque background of the Margalla Hills. The mosque is situated at the north end of Faisal Avenue and is at the northernmost end of the city at the foot of the Margalla Hills. The Margella Hills are the westernmost foothills of the Himalayas. As a result of the Faisal Mosque’s elevated position a view of the mosque can be seen from miles away both day and night. From 1986 to 1993, the Faisal Mosque was the largest mosque in the world.

The mosque does not have the normal domes that are common with most mosques thus giving it a unique look. The mosque has eight slopping triangles which make up the roof top, found on a Bedouin’s tent. It has four minarets which are common in Turkish architecture.

The mosque previously had a university on its grounds but now only houses a library, lecture hall, museum and café accredited to the university. In the main prayer hall where the peak of the tent like shape is, there is white marble which is decorated with mosaics done by the Pakistani artist Sadeqain. In the same prayer hall is a beautiful Turkish-style chandelier.

The whole mosque is built on a fifty four thousand square foot area. The mosque is designed to hold up to ten thousand worshippers in the main prayer hall, the courtyard can hold up to forty thousand people while the grounds can hold up to two hundred thousand people.

Against the night sky the Faisal Mosque looks like a giant glittering crystal standing protected by four minaret sentries. Its beauty in the night is just as beautiful in the daylight with the sun rising sending out hues of orange and yellow in the sky which give the mosque a magical mysterious look.

It was surprisingly difficult to come up with a suitable shot for this month’s dSLR Monthly ‘adventure’ theme, but finding myself returning, time after time, to this a picture in my back catalogue, felt this was the shot to include.

I took this on a rather blustery day last September off Lyme Regis, where, while a yacht race played out on the horizon, a loan adventurous para water skier, skilfully and at great speed, took to high seas under the immense power of the wind. I just could not get over the size of the sail and the length of the cables. This must be one of he most exhilarating sporting adventures!

Leather Travel Bags Vs Nylon Travel Bags

For many less frequent travellers consideration about what their bag is made of is often less of a concern than e.g. a person who travels frequently over medium to long distances. People who travel long distances e.g. using airports are often more likely to consider quality and durability of materials as well as style in their choice of bag / luggage. This type of traveller may also be less price-sensitive and more proactive when it comes to purchasing their bags.

Nylon Travel Bags

Since Wallace Carothers of DuPont reportedly invented nylon in the late 1930s, its many advantages and potential applications have meant that it and other man-made polymers and materials have been used in almost every aspect of our lives. The fact that it is man-made materials like nylon give tremendous flexibility in the shapes, sizes, and colours that can be made from it, and the designs, decoration and printing that can be added to it. The uniform chemical and manufacturing process of nylon and its flexibility as a material means that the finished product can be made very uniform e.g. in colour, thickness, consistency and quality. Although a strip of nylon has strength because of the way the many fine nylon strands fit together, and because of a degree of ‘give’, it is often thin enough to make it relatively easy to stitch or bond together. Producing the type of nylon material used in travel bags is often a large scale process and this and some of the factors already mentioned mean that nylon is a relatively cheap material to use in the manufacture of other items e.g. travel bags. This brings the cost of nylon based travel bags down to level that’s relatively affordable to all. Nylon is a flexible material, and relatively durable as longs as it isn’t exposed to sharp objects, heavy weights and awkward shapes / awkward shaped objects inside the nylon travel bags. Unfortunately, lower quality nylon bags sometimes don’t have strong or high quality zips, seams, straps, handles or pockets, and as such their lifetime can be shortened by the failure of any of these parts, and the fact that it is unlikely to be worth the price of repairing any of them if / when they break.

Leather Bags

In terms of design the variety of modern leather travel bag designs and features means that the choice is now incredibly wide. Although the range of colours may generally not be as wide (or the demand for certain colours may not be as wide) the colours used in modern leather travel bags tend to play tot the strengths of this unique material and bring out the best, and the most tasteful aspects of it. Since good quality, thick leather hides are ach only big enough to make a relatively small quantity of bags, each bag is likely to have its own level of individuality e.g. slight colour difference and sometimes ‘range marks’. Since full grain high quality leather really undergoes minimal processing e.g. hair removal and tanning, the marks / scars made on the animal’s skin during life e.g. from wire fencing, insect bites etc, may still be just evident in some sections of leather. This individuality and authenticity is part of the beauty and appeal of leather travel bags.

As a material, leather is very strong and resistant to scrapes, scratches and bumps. It also provides an extra degree of protection for the contents within the bag that nylon does not. High quality leather travel bags tend to have very strong stitching, strong zips which have leather pullers. There also tends to be generous cargo spaces in these bags, and they tend to have many other practical and handy pockets e.g. flap-over pockets with magnetic studs and zipped pockets. Storage pockets for laptop computers are now also commonplace in these bags. The bottom of high quality leather travel bags are often protected with domed metal studs, the anchor points are usually extra secure, and any straps are often detachable with comfort pads. The handles also tend to be very strong with wrap-around leather comfort pads in many cases. Obviously, for quality of this kind you may expect to pay more than for their nylon counterparts. However, leather travel bags tend to be much more durable and hard wearing, and over the lifetime of the bag (which literally could be a lifetime) they actually work out to be relatively inexpensive. Leather travel bags also seem to create the right balance between style and practicality, and never seem to go out of fashion.
